Bill Bowerman and Phi Knight founded the company in 1964 with the "Blue Ribbon Sports" brand, a company that markets sports shoes produced by the Japanese Onitsuka Tiger (Asics Corportation from 1977 onwards) in the USA. In a few months they managed to sell 1300 pairs of running shoes, then in 1965 sales reached 20 thousand. Only in 1971 did it become Nike based in Beaverton, in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.
The name, inspired by the Greek goddess of victory Nike, a winged goddess capable of moving at high speed, was recommended by Jeff Johnson (one of Knight's collaborators), while the logo was designed by a graphics student, Carolyn Davidson for only $35.
Over the years, Nike has become the world's leading manufacturer of sports accessories and clothing, especially for football, tennis, the NBA and many other sports disciplines.
But in addition to clothing for men and women, Nike is appreciated above all for its sneakers which over the years have introduced numerous innovative technologies and revived models that became icons in previous years.
In 1979 he patented the cushioning system known as Air Max, a technology used in many Nike shoes now on the market.
The launch of the Air Jordan then took place in 1985 and was the first model designed in collaboration with Michael Jordan, a global NBA icon.
The collaborations continue to be numerous even later, for example the one with Agassi and with athletes from many other disciplines, such as the collaboration with the Brazilian national football team with Ronaldo.
In 1987 the Nike Air Max 1 was born, the first model of the Air Max family, which implemented Air technology.
Sergio Lozano then designed, in the mid-90s, the Nike Air Max 95, initially designed for heavier athletes in order to cushion the impact with the asphalt as much as possible.
Subsequently, the Air Max 97 was born, characterized by reflective lines that stand out on the leather upper.
Subsequently the Air Max 98 which lived a bit in the shadow of the Air Max 95 and 97, but which today are very much back in vogue. They take inspiration from the sole with Max Air unit from 95 and for the leather and fabric upper from 97.
After the 2000s, Nike also became a reference brand for streetwear, not only linked to sports. In fact, the Nike SB skateboarding line is born. Then there are other collaborations that become the object of desire for many, such as Nelly's Air Force One in 2002 and the Air Yeezy I and II in collaboration with Kanye West.
